The winery and the vineyards are located in the town of Benissa, in the Marina Alta region, in the north of Alicante.
Between the mountains of Bèrnia, la Solana and Oltà and the Mediterranean Sea, we find a unique landscape, full of vineyards among olive, carob and almond trees, and woodland areas that, year after year, gain ground as farmland is gradually abandoned.
Joan de la Casa's vineyard sits at an altitude of between 60 and 160 metres, within the Benissa-Teulada syncline, which gives the soil its peculiar, unique character: layers of marine sediment, high in limestone, with strata of "tap" stone and a denser grey stone called "fiter" — used to build the dry-stone terrace walls that shape the gentle hills of the syncline.
Those mountains near the sea, and the Marina Alta's position as a spit of land almost surrounded by the sea, give the region an almost island-like climate, strongly shaped by the Mediterranean — three of its four sides are bordered by it. This creates a microclimate that favours the vines: mild winters and warm summers with gentle temperatures and little thermal swing, which is what makes the native Muscat of Alexandria and Giró varieties so distinctive.
The strong influence of the sea breeze, known locally as the Llebeig wind, cools the air in summer and softens winter temperatures, while keeping the air humid year-round.
